Volunteers from the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre help to encourage green transportation by providing bike check service at Whoop-Up Days
Lethbridge, Alta. – Whoop-Up Days is encouraging guests to go green this Whoop-Up Days by riding their bikes to the Lethbridge & District Exhibition grounds. To ensure a secure and easy process, volunteers from the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre (CSAC) will staff a bike check everyday at Whoop-Up Days, where guests can safely leave their bikes while they enjoy the show.
The bike check service will be located at the old Safety City location on the north end of the Lethbridge & District Exhibition campus. The service is provided free of charge, although users are encouraged to make donations to support the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre. The bike check will run from noon to 12:30 a.m. every day during Whoop-Up Days from Aug. 20-24. More detailed information regarding Whoop-Up Days parking, drop-off areas and transportation will be shared in the coming weeks.
“The bike check service is not only a direct response to requests we’ve heard from our guests, but is also a great chance to give back to our community by partnering with the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre,” says Paul Kingsmith, Director, Community Engagement, Lethbridge & District Exhibition. “Riding a bike to Whoop-Up Days helps to alleviate vehicle traffic and is an environmentally-friendly option, so we want to make it as easy as possible for guests to use this option. We’re thankful for the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre who are making this initiative a reality.”
Established in 2019, the CSAC is the only stand-alone Sexual Assault Centre in Southwestern Alberta, providing leadership, advocacy, and comprehensive services for victims of sexual violence. As a community-based organization, it serves people of all ages, provides public education, and advocates with the government to create awareness and change. In November 2023, the organization successfully completed renovations for the Chinook Child and Youth Advocacy Centre (CCYAC); as one of nine Child Advocacy Centres across Alberta and 48 Centres across Canada, the CCYAC is a specialized program dedicated to giving children and youth who have experienced abuse or severe neglect a safe space to share their story and receive the support and resources they need.
“We are so honoured to be part of this initiative,” Kristine Cassie, the CEO of the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre says. “It not only fosters community engagement and healthy living, it also gives us the opportunity to connect with those around us and spread important information about the crucial work our organization does in Southern Alberta. We are grateful for the collaboration, opportunity, and generous support.”
The Chinook Sexual Assault Centre is participating in Rogers Birdies for Kids (BFK) presented by AltaLink this year. As an organization, they receive 100% of the donations to the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre, all of which will go directly to supporting the programming of the Chinook Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. All donations through BFK will be matched up to 50%, meaning donations will go even further in supporting our community. The Rogers Charity Classic runs from August 14th-18 2024, with donations being accepted now through August 31st. Whoop-Up Days is proud to make a donation to the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre through BFK, ensuring the funds have the capacity to impact even more lives.
